A Certificate of Analysis can look intimidating — a page of chromatograms, retention times, and numbers. But you don’t need to be an analytical chemist to tell a solid COA from a weak one. Here’s a field guide to the sections that matter.
1. Identity
Start at the top: does the COA name the exact compound and, ideally, its sequence or molecular formula? The identity section should be backed by mass spectrometry — look for a measured molecular weight compared against the theoretical (expected) weight. If the two match, the compound is what it claims to be.
2. Purity and the chromatogram
The purity figure — usually expressed as a percentage from HPLC — is the headline number. But look at the chromatogram itself if it’s included. You want to see one clean, dominant peak. A cluster of smaller peaks alongside it indicates impurities, even if the headline purity still reads high. The percentage and the visual should tell the same story.
3. Method and instrument
A credible COA states how the analysis was done — the technique (e.g. RP-HPLC, ESI-MS), and often the instrument and conditions. Vague results with no stated method are a warning sign. The method is what makes the number reproducible and meaningful.
4. Batch number and date
Crucially, the COA should carry a batch or lot number, and it should match the number on the vial you received. A COA for a different batch is no COA at all. Check the date of analysis too — results should relate to the material in your hands, not a sample tested years earlier.
5. The issuing laboratory
Finally, who signed it? A named, independent, accredited laboratory carries far more weight than an unnamed “in-house” stamp. Independent issuance removes the conflict of interest that comes with a supplier grading its own product.
