A peptide can leave the laboratory at 99% purity and arrive degraded if it’s handled carelessly in between. Peptides are sensitive molecules, and their integrity depends heavily on temperature, moisture, and physical form. This article explains why proper storage matters, how lyophilised (freeze-dried) research peptides are actually shipped, and where true cold-chain logistics — the kind used for temperature-sensitive finished medicinal products — fits into the picture.

Why peptides degrade

Peptides are chains of amino acids held together by peptide bonds. Those bonds, and the side chains along the chain, are vulnerable to several degradation pathways — chiefly hydrolysis (breakdown in the presence of water), oxidation, and heat-driven breakdown. The warmer and wetter the environment, the faster these reactions proceed. Repeated temperature fluctuation is particularly damaging.

Lyophilisation: the stable form

This is why research peptides are almost always supplied lyophilised — freeze-dried into a solid powder with the water removed. In lyophilised form, the hydrolysis pathway is largely shut down, and the compound is stable at room temperature for the duration of standard courier transit — this is why lyophilised peptides don’t require cold-chain shipping. Good laboratory storage practice

Once received, lyophilised material should be kept cold and dry, away from light, and subjected to as few freeze-thaw cycles as possible. Each label should clearly carry the compound name, lot number, purity, and storage conditions so that material can be tracked and stored correctly over time.
