Why peptides degrade
Peptides are chains of amino acids held together by peptide bonds. Those bonds, and the side chains along the chain, are vulnerable to several degradation pathways — chiefly hydrolysis (breakdown in the presence of water), oxidation, and heat-driven breakdown. The warmer and wetter the environment, the faster these reactions proceed. Repeated temperature fluctuation is particularly damaging.
Lyophilisation: the stable form
This is why research peptides are almost always supplied lyophilised — freeze-dried into a solid powder with the water removed. In lyophilised form, the hydrolysis pathway is largely shut down, and the compound is far more stable for storage and transit than it would be in solution. Keeping the material dry and cold is the single biggest factor in preserving it.
