Research background: GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine, complexed with a copper(II) ion) is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide first isolated from human plasma. Its primary documented mechanism is binding and delivering bioavailable copper to enzymes that regulate extracellular matrix production. Research literature reports upregulation of collagen I, III, and IV synthesis, increased glycosaminoglycan production, and broad effects on gene expression in dermal and connective-tissue research models. Published wound-healing and collagen-remodelling studies indicate the copper-bound form is generally required to reproduce these effects — the uncomplexed tripeptide (without copper) does not reliably replicate them in the same models.
Literature: Maquart et al. (1988), collagen synthesis in cultured fibroblasts; subsequent gene-expression and wound-model studies comparing GHK and GHK-Cu.
