Research background: MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide, one of a small family of peptides encoded within mitochondrial DNA. Research indicates it activates AMPK via folate-cycle pathway modulation, with downstream effects on glucose uptake (GLUT4 translocation) and fat oxidation reported in preclinical models. Endogenous MOTS-C rises during exercise in humans, which has driven research interest in it as a metabolic signalling molecule; injectable MOTS-C research to date is confined to animal models.
